Industrial Visit to Pharmaceutical Industry,Sai Mirra Innopharm Pvt. Ltd. Ambattur, Chennai
An industrial visit to a Pharmaceutical Industry – Sai Mirra Innopharm Pvt. Ltd.
Ambattur,Chennai was organized by the P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology, Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science on 26th July 2024. Fifty students of II M.Sc. and III B.Sc. Microbiology class accompanied by two faculty members visited the Pharma industry.
The technical team of the industry took over the students, segregated into batches and explained about the Good lab practices and Good manufacturing practices that are followed in the pharmaceutical industries.
The students visited different departments like production, quality control, quality assurance where they were taught how the raw materials are tested before as well as in-process and testing of the finished product to determine whether it was made according to the needs of GMP and meets all of its specifications, primary and secondary packaging departments and instrumentation rooms. They were explained about the storage conditions and labeling of raw materials, the different stages of manufacturing process such as granulation, compression, tablets making, capsule filling, syrup filling and packing and packaging.
The students have earned knowledge about industrial production of pharmaceutical products and also the role of a Microbiologist in pharmaceutical industry.
PG. & Research Department of Microbiology put up a stall for a period of two days on 08.08.24 and 09.08.24 at “Genesis 2K24” hosted by Asan Memorial Senior Secondary School, Chennai as part of an activity to promote admission. Students of Microbiology department accompanied by faculty, highlighted the significance of Microbiology, communicated the societal concerns surrounding microbes, displayed various microbiome from human and environmental sources, showcased microbial products and presented a video about viruses and parasites to an audience of pupils at secondary school levels attending Genesis 2K24. The stall had a game as well and gave out prizes. The events intend to increase understanding the significance of Microbiology and showcasing the dual roles as harmful and their incredible potential to be used for the benefit of humankind, attracted many students and had an interactive session.

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES
The Department of Life Sciences , Microbiology & Biochemistry represented the college for the 7th Youth Health Mela – 2024 , organized by Cancer Institute (WIA), Adayar, Chennai from 15th to 17th February – 2024.
The Departments organized an Awareness Stall on Food adulteration and demonstrated experiments to find out the adulterants in foodstuffs and explained the impact of the harmful effects of the food adulterants to the consumers. The stall was visited by Government officials, Industrialists, College students, School children, faculties and the general public.
Microbiology Department students participated in various events and two students won prizes in Slogan writing and Poetry.

Dr. S. Kanimozhi, Dean – Administration, Head, P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology attended an event “Inspire Inclusion Count her in” celebrating International Women’s Day, organized by the Women Business Council of the Madras Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) on 08.03.2024.
Mrs. N. Shyamala, Assistant Professor, P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology, won first prize in Poster presentation at “International Conference on Biotechnological Emergence in Science and Technology (ICBEST 2.0)” on 5th and 6th October 2023, organized by Department of Biotechnology, College of Science and Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram Campus, Chennai.
The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology in association with Mahathi Biotech., Ramapuram Chennai, offered a Value added Course on “An Entrepreneurial Approach in Spirulina Farming” for the Microbiology and Biochemistry students and the course commenced from 05.03.2024. The course imparted the practical knowledge and skills to the students for their capacity building for Spirulina biomass production and utilization of the biomass for various value added compounds and products
P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology of Asan Memorial College of Arts & Science organized a Special Lecture on Breast Cancer Awareness on 2nd February 2024.
The Resource person of the programme Dr.Saritha Damodaran, Senior Clinical & Radiation Oncologist, Parvathy Hospital, Chennai, Board member of Rotary Club of Chennai Medical Fraternity & Chairman – Disease Prevention and Treatment, delivered an insightful and educational talk on breast cancer. She discussed the causes, symptoms, and diagnosis of the disease and emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment. The audience was made aware of the risk factors and preventive measures that could help reduce the risk of breast cancer.
P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology organized a one-day workshop on Advanced Molecular Techniques for the I M.Sc. and III B.Sc. Microbiology students on 29.01.2024. The Resource person of the workshop Mrs.T. Shanthi, Production Manager, ORANGE progene, OPRL Biosciences (P) Ltd., Chennai demonstrated the Molecular Techniques.
This program aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. The workshop provides students a unique opportunity to acquire hands-on experience in essential Molecular Biology techniques and to gain practical skills equipping with the ability to execute experiments with precision and confidence
The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology in association with Avigen Biotech PVT.LTD., Chrompet, Chennai, offered a Value added Course on “Prospects of Mushroom Cultivation Technology” for the Microbiology and Biochemistry students and the course commenced from 11.10.23. The course provided in-depth knowledge of mushroom cultivation techniques enabling students to gain hands – on experience through practical sessions allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge to real – world cultivation scenario.

Admission Promotional Activity
To increase awareness about Microbiology for admission into B.Sc. Microbiology course, the higher secondary school children were addressed by the faculty of P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology and explained the importance and job opportunities in the field of Microbiology orally and through pamphlets. The P.G & Research Department of Microbiology conducted Admission Promotional activities between 20.05.2022 and 25.05.2022, soon after the declaration of higher secondary results. Wish cards, Chocolates and Pamphlets, had been distributed in various schools in the stretch of Velachery to Tambaram, Kovilambakkam, Hastinapuram, Sholinganallur, Saidapet etc.
Interdepartmental and Intradepartmental competitions on the title “Health Awareness”
The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology organized Interdepartmental and intradepartmental competitions on the title “Health Awareness” on 27.08.2022 with the aim of inducing a healthier society. The Department has taken an initiative to conduct various competitions to emphasize the importance of balanced diet and to prevent drug abuse.
The following competitions are conducted on varied titles in English and Tamil.

International Microorganisms Day
The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology celebrated the International Microorganisms Day on 17.09.2022, aimed to encourage young learners to explore the world of microscopic organisms that are important throughout our daily life. This programme was initiated by the II.M.Sc Applied Microbiology students. The P.G. students invited all the B.Sc. Microbiology students and inaugurated the programme by explaining the scope and opportunities, conducted various competitions and distributed prizes.
Health Awareness Programme on “Health and Well-being”
P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology organised a programme on “Health and Well-being” on 22nd September 2022. The programme was inaugurated by Dr.S.Muthukumar, Founder & Chairman and Mr.AmuthanRajkumar, General Manager, Sales & Marketing, Parvathy Hospital, Chrompet and Oragadam, Chennai. Chief Guest Dr.S.Muthukumar, addressed the participants and insisted to maintain a good health by doing proper exercise which improves the fitness, makes one stronger and helps to manage health conditions.
The Resource person’s of the programmeDr.VijayaJeyavel, Clinical Manager, Home Care Department, Parvathy Hospital, Chennai, gave an awareness talk on “Ill Effects of Tobacco” and Dr. K. Sasisree, Head, Department of Emergency Medicine, Parvathy Hospital, Chennai, elucidated the importance of “Medical Emergencies”. Around 150 students from various departments of the college actively participated and benefited from the programme. The programme created awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and helped to build the capacities required to rapidly respond and recover from any emergency health threat. Around 100 participants from various departments attended the programme. The highlights of the programme were published in MalayalaManorama, Mathruboomi and in Chrompet Times.
Industrial visit to Micro Compost Centre
An Industrial visit to Micro Compost Centre under Greater Chennai Corporation at Pudhunagar, 5th street, Medavakkam was organized by P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology on 15th October 2022 for the students of third year B.Sc. Microbiology (2020-2023 batch).
Thirty students accompanied by two staff members visited the place. Micro Compost In-charge Mrs. Varalakshmi and Co-ordinatorMr.Balasubramanian explained the functioning and the entire process of the Unit. The students learnt about the collection of wastes, processing and drying and packaging the dried compost. They have acquired knowledge on how a waste is processed into a useable form.All the students actively participated and interacted with the resource persons.
Industrial visit to Sewage Treatment Plant
The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology organized an Industrial visit for II M.Sc. Applied Microbiology students(2021-2023 batch) to a Sewage Treatment Plant at Kodungaiyur, a unit of Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Chennai on 20th October 2022 accompanied by two faculty members. The objective of the visit was to learn practical learning based on the extension concept of “Seeing is believing” and through interaction with the Engineers and Field operators. All the students actively participated and interacted with the resource persons and acquired knowledge on various water treatment processes.

An industrial visit to a Pharmaceutical Industry- FOURRTS India Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. Kelambakkam, Chennai – 603103, was organized by the P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology, Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science on 27th October 2022. Fourty Post-graduate students accompanied by three faculty members visited the Pharma industry. The students learnt about the processes carried out under each department such as, storage conditions and labeling of raw materials, the different stages of manufacturing processes such as granulation, compression, tablets making, capsule filling, syrup filling and packaging and the role of a Microbiologist in a pharmaceutical industry. The students had a valuable interaction with the professional team, which was informative and learning experience for them.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology & Biochemistry, Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science on 8th December 2022 with Dr.UK Institute of Health Sciences and Research (Approved by Bharat SevakSamaj) Iyyappanthangal, Chennai, with the aim to facilitate Life science students of our college to do a certificate course in Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology which helps students learn to diagnose, detect and treat diseases and imparts in-depth knowledge and technical skills of clinical Laboratory.

Webinar “Drug Development Process from Bench to Bedside”
The P.G & Research Department of Microbiology of Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, in association with the P.G & Research Department of Biochemistry, organized a webinar on “Drug Development Process from Bench to Bedside” on 11.06.2020. The Resource person of the webinar is Dr.MuraliBadanthadka, Professor in Pharmacy & Deputy Director, NUCARE, Mangalore. Around 97 members including students and faculty of Asan Memorial College of Arts & Science and from other institutions participated in the webinar. The Resource person discussed on various stages of drug development process such as, Early Drug Discovery, Preclinical Research, Investigational New Drug Application, Clinical Research, Regulatory Review, Approval and Post-marketing Safety Surveillance to ensure that the drug is safe and effective in improving the length and quality of life and relieving pain and suffering. The participants gained knowledge about the role of pharmaceutical industry, and the challenges faced in each step of the drug discovery process.

The P.G & Research Department of Microbiology of Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, in association with the P.G & Research Department of Biochemistry, organized a webinar on “DIETICIAN TIPS DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC” on 22.07.2020. The Resource person of the webinarisDr. P.V.Lakshmi, Dietician and Head Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Gleneagles Global Health City, Perumbakam, Chennai. Around 99 members including students and faculty of Asan Memorial College of Arts & Science participated in the webinar. The Resource person enlightened the participants in different ways to boost immunity and to combat stress through proper diet. The participants gained knowledge on authentic dietary guidelines about nutrition and food safety to withstand COVID-19.
Parent Teachers Meeting
Parent Teachers meeting was organized for the students of II.B.Sc. &III.B.Sc. Microbiology from 28.01.2021 to 31.01.2021 in a motive to have interact with parents regarding the progress shown by their wards and finding effective solutions to the problems coming in the way of development of their ward. - All the Students of I.M.Sc Applied Microbiology underwent an Internship training Programme on Clinical & Diagnostic Microbiology at Deepam Hospital, Tambaram, Chennai for 21 days.
Admission Promotional Activity
As a part of publicizing science course and to increase awareness about Microbiology for admission into B.Sc. Microbiology course, the higher secondary school children were addressed by the faculty of P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology and explained the importance and job opportunities in the field of Microbiology orally and through pamphlets. Also the pamphlets carrying information about the merits of the department such as, laboratory facilities possessing excellent infrastructure with well-furnished lab sections fully equipped with advanced sophisticated instruments, highly qualified teaching faculties and technically qualified non-teaching staff, effective teaching with modern teaching aids, organizing guest lectures, workshops and opportunities for collaborative research work in reputed industries, co-curricular activities like outreach, awareness programme and community services , conduction of student support programme and placement programmes, providing career guidance and assistance for placements were issued.
The faculty wished the students for their success in examination and complimented with folders for the purpose of keeping certificates in a safe manner and a wish card detailing unique features of the college and a year calendar printed on the other side. Pamphlets possessing the career scope and a plethora of opportunities after completing this degree program were distributed.
Awareness Programme on “Blood Donation & Blood Bank Activities”
The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology and Red Ribbon Club of Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, Chennai 600100, organised an awareness programme on “Blood Donation & Blood Bank Activities” on 22nd August 2019. The Guest Speakers of the programme Mr.V.Selvakumar, Social Welfare officer, and Dr.M.K.Rakesh, The Tamilnadu, M.G.R.Medical University, Guindy, Chennai 32, elucidated the importance of Blood Donation and about the activities of Blood Bank. Students from under-graduation and post-graduation of our college participated in this programme. The programme motivated the younger generation towards the importance of Blood Donation for the cause of society and encouraged student community to do this noble act voluntarily without compensation and compulsion. The programme highlights were published in Nanganallur Times a weekly magazine.
Health Awareness Programme on “Ill Effects of Tobacco”
The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology of Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, Chennai 600100, organized a health awareness programme on “Ill Effects of Tobacco” on 30th August 2019. The resource person of the programme Dr.N.S.Vimalathithan Surgeon Oncologist, Gleneagles Global City, Perumbakkam, Chennai, explained about cancer, carcinogens, effects and consequences of using tobacco, smoking, consuming alcohol etc. Around 150 students of various Departments of the college were benefitted from the programme. The Programme was highly interactive and planted knowledge amongst students to understand the serious threat of tobacco on health. The programme had been published in weekly magazines such as Nanganallur Times, Adambakkam Times, T.Nagar Times and in Velachery Talk.
Health and Nutrition Awareness Programme on “Poshan Abhiyaan – Health & Nutrition”
The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology in association with National Service Scheme of Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, Chennai 600100, organized a Health awareness programme on “Poshan Abhiyaan – Health & Nutrition” on 17th September 2019. Dr.T.S.Santhi, Director, Asan Institute of Management, Dr.S.Kanimozhi, Head, Department of Microbiology, Dr.T.Aryamala, In-charge, Shift II and NSS program officers felicitated the programme. The resource person of the programme Mrs.S.Poornima, Child Growth Project Officer, St.Thomas Mount, Chennai-64, elucidated the importance of intake of nutritious food and balanced diet for healthy livelihood and listed out the dreadful effects of junk foods. The programme was highly interactive, emphasized about holistic nutrition, life style, wellness and healthy living and ended with enriched knowledge within the younger minds of about 150 students of various departments of both the shifts of the college. The programme had been published in weekly magazines such as Nanganallur Times, Velachery Mail, Adambakkam Times, Chrompet Times and in Velachery Talk.
“An Extravagant Expo”- A Mega Exhibition cum Career Guidance Programme for the students at Higher Secondary Level.
The Departments of Science and Humanities of Asan Memorial college of Arts & Science, Jaladampet, Chennai 600 100 presented “An Extravagant Expo”- A Mega Exhibition cum Career Guidance Programme for the students at Higher Secondary Level on 16th October 2019. This mega event involving five department’s was organized and coordinated by Convenor, Dr.S.Kanimozhi, Head & Associate Professor, P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology, Asan Memorial College of Arts & Science, Chennai. The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr.K.Pandiyan, Controller of Examinations, University of Madras, Chennai and Dr.S.Ramanathan, Principal, Member – Syndicate, University of Madras presided over the programme. The exhibits of live/working models, display of specimens/instruments, and demonstration of mini experiments and visual presentation of concepts were displayed in the exhibition. About 550 students from 12 different Government, Matriculation and CBSC schools at higher secondary level in South Chennai participated and benefited from the exhibition. This exhibition encouraged a scientific temper among students through multifarious displays of projects based on Science and Humanities. The news coverage of the programme had been circulated in OMR voice, Tambaram Times, Nanganallur Times, Velachery Mail and Selaiyur Times.

One day Workshop on PCR and RT-PCR
The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology in association with HiMedia Laboratories organized a one-day workshop on PCR and RT-PCR for the Post- Graduate students of P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology, Asan Memorial College of Arts & Science on 13.12.2019. The Resource person of the programme was Mr.Michael Raj, Senior Marketing Executive, Hi Media Laboratories Pvt. Ltd., Chennai. Obtained hands-on experience, learnt to design primers, RT-PCR data analysis and interpretation and would able to use this molecular technique in clinical diagnosis.
Regional Level one Day Workshop on “Significance of Health, Hygiene and Nutrition”
The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology of Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, Chennai- 600100, in association with Indian Science Congress Association – Chennai Chapter organized, A Regional Level One Day Workshop on “The Significance of Health, Hygiene & Nutrition for Rural Women” on 8th January 2020. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr.A.A. Alagiriswamy, Treasurer, Indian Science Congress Association – Chennai Chapter & Senior Grade Assistant Professor, Department of Physics & Nanotechnology, SRM Institute of Science & Technology, Kattankulathur Campus and Mr.Bhaskar Reddy Head Sales & Marketing, Gleneagles Global Health City, Perumbakkam, Chennai. Dr.S.Ramanathan Principal, AMCAS, Member Syndicate University of Madras, felicitated the programme. Dr.S.Kanimozhi, Organizing Secretary & Head, P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology welcomed the gathering. Dr.Raksha, Department of Surgical Oncology, Gleneagles Global Health City, Perumbakkam, Chennai, gave an awareness talk on “Women Wellness and Breast Cancer”. “Significance of Women Hygiene” was well explained by Ms.J.Annie Merlin, Nurse Manager, Hospital Infection Control, Gleneagles Global Health City, Perumbakkam, Chennai. Dr.P.Venkatalakshmi, Chief Dietician and Head, Department of Clinical Nutrition, Gleneagles Global Health City, Perumbakkam, Chennai elucidated the “Importance of Good Nutrition for Healthy Life”. All the sessions of the workshop were highly informative and interactive and revealed the importance of women health in a family. Around 100 women participants from the rural localities of Jalladianpet, Pallikaranai, Chitalapakkam, Medavakkam etc. and staff and students of Asan Memorial College of Arts & Science attended the workshop and also benefited from the free consultation with the Doctors. The proceedings of the programme had been published in magazines such as, Malayala Manorama, Adambakkam Times, Junior Kural and in Velachery Talk.

Industrial Visit to Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI)
The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology of Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, Chennai- 600100 organized an Industrial visit for students of II B.Sc. Microbiology to Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Adyar on 27.02.2020. 30 students accompanied by 2 faculty of the department Dr.K.Gautam, Assistant Professor and Dr.V.Dhanalakshmi, Assistant Professor visited CLRI. The students learnt about the various techniques and methods involved in processing of animal skin till the management and disposal of liquid and solid wastes. The visit benefited the students to learn about leather processing and leather making by bioprocessing.
Industrial Visit to TamilNadu Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited (TCMPF) – Aavin Dairy
The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology of Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, Chennai 600100 organized an Industrial visit for students of III B.Sc Microbiology to Tamilnadu Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited (TCMPF) – Aavin Dairy, Sholinganallur Unit, Chennai 119 on 02.03.2020. 30 students accompanied by 2 faculty of the department Dr.R.Sankar, Assistant Professor and Mrs.N.Shyamala, Assistant Professor visited the Aavin Dairy. The students learnt the operations of the factory from the procurement of milk from the vendors till the processing of final milk and milk products and understood the operations of high precise equipments for confirming the standards and parameters of milk and milk products.
Awareness programme on “COVID – 19”
The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology in association with National Service Scheme of Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, Chennai 600100, organized, An Awareness programme on “COVID – 19” on 6th March 2020. Dr.S.Ramanathan, Principal, Asan Memorial College of Arts & Science & Member – Syndicate, University of Madras, felicitated the programme. Dr.S.Kanimozhi, Convenor of the programme convened the event. The resource person of the programme, Dr.B.Rayvathy, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, Dr.A.L.M. PGIBMS, Taramani Campus, University of Madras, distinctly elucidated about the corona virus origin, infection, symptoms, mode of transmission, diagnosis, prophylaxis etc. and highlighted the importance of following basic hygiene, safe food practices, etc. The importance of hand wash in avoiding the spread of the disease was fixed in the minds of the participants by providing hand sanitizer and pamphlets highlighting the facts about COVID -19 were distributed by the Microbiology students. Around 150 students and teaching and non-teaching faculty of the college attended and benefitted from the programme. The programme educated students and staff about positive preventive measures, helped in reducing their anxiety and encouraged students to become agents for disease prevention and control at home, in institution, and in their community by talking to others about how to prevent the spread of viruses to promote public health. . The programme had been published in weekly magazines such as, Chrompet Times, Adambakkam Times, Junior Kural and in Dinathanthi.
Webinar – “An Overview on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Patenting”
The P.G & Research Department of Microbiology of Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet , Chennai-600100, organized a webinar on “An Overview on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Patenting” on 01.05.2020.The Resource person of the webinar Ms.Priyadarsini Shanmugam , Director , Patwise Consulting Solutions, Chennai, is an Intellectual Property Expert, Patent Trademark and Copyrights Consultant , Registered. Indian Patent Agent. The resource person delivered a talk on the importance and types of Intellectual Property Rights and how to approach for patenting for the novel findings and inventions and types of patents. She also updated the participants the significance of protecting the intellectual creation and explained about the non-patentable inventions. Around 230 participants from various Academic Institutions, Industry and Research Organizations across the globe attended the webinar.

The P.G & Research Department of Microbiology of Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, Chennai-600100, conjointly with The P.G & Research Department of Biochemistry organized a webinar on “Psychology- Corona Virus Anxiety” on 19.05.2020. The Resource person of the webinar, Dr.S.Edwin Rajesh, Director, Kirubai Physio & Rehabilitation Centre, Chennai, addressed the participants on how to cope up the stress and fear raised up due to corona virus pandemic, and the relaxation practices such as deep breathing, meditation etc., to get through the stressful time. Dr.UmaVenkatesh, Uro-Gynecologist, Gleneagles Global Health City, Perumbakam, presented an awareness talk and demonstrated pelvic exercises for various women related problems. Dr.S.Kanimozhi, Head of the Department welcomed the gathering and Dr.S.Ramanathan, Principal, Member Syndicate, University of Madras, delivered a special address. The event created awareness among 150 girl students and female faculty of our college. The activity was reported in Daily Magazines like Malayala Manorama, Chrompet Times, Adambakkam and Nanganallur Times.

Extension activity on “Basic Life Support Training”
• P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology organized an Extension activity on “Basic Life Support Training” jointly with Gleneagles Global Health City, Perumbakkam, Chennai on 19.09.2018 to educate and train the citizens to handle different emergency situations.
• Around 95 participants from various departments of the college including students from Shift – I and Shift – II, teaching and non-teaching faculty members attended the training programme. The Basic life support training team trained the participants to handle a victim and to provide basic life support during medical emergency circumstances such as accidents, heart/brain attack, burns, snake bites etc. The programme benefited and motivated the participants to attend the victims during emergency situations.

• The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology organized an Awareness Campaign on Enthralling Lifesciences – An Exhibition & Competitions for the students of Lifesciences on 11.10.2018. Dr.Elanchezian Manikan, Professor & Head, & Director, Dr.ALMPGIBMS, Taramani, Chennai, inaugurated the exhibition. Dr.S.Kanimozhi, Head of the Department, welcomed the gathering and felicitation was delivered by Dr.S.Ramanathan, Principal, Member Syndicate, University of Madras.
• The exhibition was well attended by around 650 students from various Government, Matriculation and CBSC schools at higher secondary level in South Chennai. The Exhibition facilitated the students to broaden their knowledge with respect to positive approach of Lifesciences with a special focus on Microbiology and exploring microbes for healthy human life. An awareness programme on “Organic Farming & Terrace gardening”
• The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology and Nature Club of Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, Chennai 600 100, organized an awareness programme on “Organic Farming & Terrace gardening” on 19th February 2019. The resource person of the programme Mrs.Jayasri Krishnan, Managing Director, D’Organica Garden Shoppee, Chennai, elucidated the significance of Organic farming in the existing scenario of farming and agriculture practices and the benefits of Terrace gardening in the urban areas where there is a limitation in gardening space.
• Dr.S.Kanimozhi, Head, Department of Microbiology welcomed the gathering and Dr. T.S. Santhi, Director, Asan Institute of Management, felicitated the programme. 150 students and faculty members of various departments of the college interacted with the resource person and benefitted from the programme. The activity was reported in Daily Magazines like, Chrompet Times, ECR Times, Adambakkam Times and Nanganallur Times.
Visit to Central Scientific Instruments Organization (CSIR), Madras complex, Taramani, Chennai.
• The P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology organized an Industrial visit to Central Scientific Instruments Organization (CSIR), Madras complex, Taramani, Chennai on 28.09.2018 an open day celebration for thirty two students of III B.Sc. Microbiology and two faculty members, Dr. R. Sankar, Assistant Professor and Mrs. N. Shyamala, Assistant Professor. Students were enriched with the knowledge about the various protocols, instruments, operational procedures of different departments such as,

• NEERI – National Environmental Engineering Research Institute

• They learned the principle, working and uses of the instruments such as PCR, DNA Sequencer, Fluoropath-pathogen detection system, Malarial parasite detection system etc. They also acquired knowledge on Nano drug formulation, heavy metal degradation, air pollution detecting system, open pond reactor for waste water treatment, wind engineering technologies, etc.

Industrial Visits
Visit to Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Adayar, Chennai
The P.G. & Research Department organized a one day Industrial Visit to Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Adayar, Chennai for the students of II B.Sc. Microbiology on 14.09.2018. 28 Students of II B.Sc. Microbiology accompanied by two faculty Mrs. B.Umamaheswari, Assistant Professor and Dr. K. Gautam, Assistant Professor visited the Biotechnology, Bioinstrumentation, Environmental Biology laboratories etc. The visit benefited the students to learn about leather processing and leather making through bioprocessing and about working principle and applications of various sophisticated instruments. They also acquired knowledge in waste water management system by visiting the waste water treatment plant available in the institute.
Awareness Programme on Road Safety
An Intradepartmental competition “Awareness Programme on Road Safety” was organized by the department on “Safe Driving Practices” for the students of M.Sc. Applied Microbiology and B.Sc. Microbiology in order to create awareness on Road Safety during the month of August 2018. Many students from under graduation and post graduation actively participated in all the three competitions. Three prizes were given for each competition.

- 650 pouches containing scale, pens (blue & Black), scale, eraser and a wish card printed with name of the college and pamphlets showing the highlights of the department were distributed to lifescience students of schools at Medavakkam, , Pallikaranai, Sholinganallur , Velachery and Tambaram .
- Parent Teachers Meeting has been organized for the UG and PG students of Microbiology from 19.02.2018 to 21.02.2018 between 9.00 am-12.30 pm.

- An Industrial visit and an Exhibition were organized for the students of II.B.Sc Microbiology and M.Phil Microbiology to CLRI, The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) on 27.09.2017. 31 students from II B.Sc Microbiology and 4 students from M.Phil Microbiology accompanied by two faculties, Mrs.B.Umamaheswari and Dr.K.Gautam visited the Exhibition. In this capsule Exhibition the students visited the Science & Technology contributions of 38 CSIR labs under 12 concepts in the field of Life Science.

- Ms.R.Sheeba of III.B.Sc Microbiology participated in the III Mahaveer Awards for Essay competition at level –III Tamil held on 30.08.2017 and 01.09.2017 and won a consolation prize of Rs.5000/-. Among 20033 students from 110 different institutions partook in the essay competition Ms.R.Sheeba of III.B.Sc Microbiology won and received the consolation prize.
- The following students of B.Sc. Microbiology 2013-2016 batch secured University Rank was presented with medals during the Annual convocation day on 7.10.2017. Cash prize of Rs.5000/- was presented to Ms. Gowsalya Saminathan for securing University I Rank in Microbiology.

- A two days State Level Workshop on “Curriculum Based Essential Molecular Techniques” is organized by P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology, Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, Chennai in associated with Himedia Laboratory private limited, Mumbai from 27.02.2015 to 28.02.2015 for the students of Lifesciences. Dr.N.Vasudeven, Director, Centre for Environmental Studies, Anna University, Chennai inaugurated the workshop. During the inaugural session, workshop manual was released by the chief guest and received by Dr.G.Rajasekaran, Zonal Manager of Himedia Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. Around 75 graduate students of Lifesciences across the State are attended the workshop.
- An Exhibition and Career Guidance Programme on “Prospects of Enchanting Lifesciences with a special focus on Microbiology” was organized by the P.G & Research Department of Microbiology, Asan Memorial College of Arts & Science, Jaladampet, Chennai 100 on 15.10.2015 and 16.10.2015.The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr.V.R.Prabavathy, Principal Scientist, M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai 600 113. The exhibition was well attended by around 700 students from various Government schools, Matriculation schools and CBSC at Higher secondary level in South Chennai. The Exhibition helped the students to widen their knowledge with respect to positive approach of Lifesciences with a special focus on Microbiology and exploring microbes for healthy human life.

- Students of III B.Sc Microbiology participated in various competitions in the programme “Micromasturi – 2015”, conducted at DG Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, on 4th September 2015.
- Four faculty members and four students of II M.Sc Applied Microbiology attended an International Seminar on New Horizons in Microbiology – Challenges and Prospects, organized by Post Graduate and Research Department of Microbiology, Mohammed Sathak College of Arts & Science, Chennai on July 31st 2015.
- I M.Sc Applied Microbiology students attended ‘A National conference on “Biomass, Bioenergy and Bioremediation” organized by Department of Microbiology, Madras Christian College, Chennai on 23rd& 24th February 2015.
- Five students from B.Sc and M.Sc Microbiology won Ist prize in Pookalam competition in Onam Celebrations held on 25.08.2015 at our college.
- Nine students from II M.Sc and M.Phil Microbiology attended a seminar on “Current Trends in Biology” on 5th Feb 2015 organized by Centre for International Co- operation in Science (CICS) at Triple Helix Auditorium of Central Leather Research Institute, Adayar.
- Four students of II M.Sc Applied Microbiology participated in a National Conference on “Frontiers in Translational Microbiology” – SANMICROFEST – 2015 on 8th January 2015 organized by PG department of Microbiology, Sri Sankara Arts & Science College, Enathur, Kancheepuram.
Events
- A two days State Level Workshop on “Curriculum Based Essential Molecular Techniques” is organized by P.G. & Research Department of Microbiology, Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science, Jaladampet, Chennai in associated with Himedia Laboratory private limited, Mumbai from 27.02.2015 to 28.02.2015 for the students of Lifesciences. Dr.N.Vasudeven, Director, Centre for Environmental Studies, Anna University, Chennai inaugurated the workshop. During the inaugural session, workshop manual was released by the chief guest and received by Dr.G.Rajasekaran, Zonal Manager of Himedia Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. Around 75 graduate students of Lifesciences across the State are attended the workshop.
- An Exhibition and Career Guidance Programme on “Prospects of Enchanting Lifesciences with a special focus on Microbiology” was organized by the P.G & Research Department of Microbiology, Asan Memorial College of Arts & Science, Jaladampet, Chennai 100 on 15.10.2015 and 16.10.2015.The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr.V.R.Prabavathy, Principal Scientist, M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai 600 113. The exhibition was well attended by around 700 students from various Government schools, Matriculation schools and CBSC at Higher secondary level in South Chennai. The Exhibition helped the students to widen their knowledge with respect to positive approach of Lifesciences with a special focus on Microbiology and exploring microbes for healthy human life.

- Dr.S.Kanimozhi, Head, Dept. of Microbiology and Ramya. D M.Phil Scholar published a full length research article on “A comparative study of zeolite loaded copper oxide and iron oxide nanoparticles and its effect on antibacterial and antifungal activity against six bacterial and three fungal isolates of secondary effluent” in an international journal with Impact factor (0.47) International Journal of Development Research. 2014, Vol. 6 (9), Page 1847 – 1857.
- Dr.I.Arulpandi, Assistant Professor and Ms. V.H. Jemimah, M.Phil Scholar, published the research paper entitled “Evaluation of antimicrobial property of biosynthesized Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles and its Application on Baby Diapers” in an international impact factor journal (1.42) “Drug Invention Today, 2014, Vol. 6(2), pages 113-119.
- All the teaching faculty and M.Phil students of Microbiology presented papers and posters on in the 12th national conference of Indian Association of Applied Microbiologists (IAAM) on ‘Global Trends and Challenges in Biosciences’ conducted at MGR Janaki College for Women on 5th& 6th November 2014.
- Dr.I.Arulpandi published a paper in an international Journal – International journal of Current Microbiology and Applied Sciences on Ganoderma adspersum and Ganoderma cupreum from South India, First report based on Molecular Phylogeny.
- Dr.I.Arulpandi published a paper in an international Journal – International Journal of Basic and Life Sciences on Prevalence of pathogenic Escherichia coli from clinical and environmental sources in Tamilnadu.
- Mrs.V.Jeyanthi published a paper in – Indian Journal of Applied Microbiology on Production and optimization of Pectinase using Aspergillus niger by solid-state fermentation and its application in fruit juice clarification.
- Mrs.V.Jeyanthi published a paper in an international Journal – Journal of Pure and Applied Microbiology on Production, Purification and Characterization of Siderophore from Pseudomonas fluorescens.

- 22 students of II B.Sc Microbiology participated in various competitions in “Swarnotsav-Micromatsuri– 2014, organized by P.G Department of Microbiology, at Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Vaishnav College on 01.10.2014.Ms.Muthulakshmi and Terasa Divya won III prize in T-Shirt painting. Ms.K.Vishnupriya and Haridharini Doss won II prize in Rangoli.
- Ms. Manisha Elizabeth Varghese and Kowsalya Swaminathan of II B.Sc Microbiology won First Prize in Quiz competition in Microfest 2014, conducted by Department of Microbiology, Ethiraj College on 18th August 2014.
- Ms. Kiran Srinivasan of I B.Sc Microbiology participated in Essay writing competition conducted on the occasion of “Geneva Convention Day” by Indian Red Cross Society, Egmore on 01.08.2014.
