Industry Connect Seminar – 12-08-24

Title:Unleashing Your Inner RJ

The Department of Visual Communication at Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science organized an insightful industry connect seminar on August 12, 2024. The seminar, titled “Radio Jockey – Unleashing Your Inner RJ,” aimed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practices, specifically focusing on the field of radio jockeying.

RJ Dheena, a renowned radio personality, led the seminar with his expertise and experience in the industry. He shared valuable insights into the world of radio jockeying, emphasizing the importance of creativity, communication skills, and the ability to connect with listeners.The seminar was highly interactive, with RJ Dheena encouraging students to ask questions and share their thoughts. This interaction allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of the profession and clarify any doubts they had about pursuing a career in radio jockeying.

Student Feedback:

Students expressed that they gained immense knowledge from the session and felt more confident about exploring a career in radio jockeying.

385th Madras Day Celebration

Asan Memorial college of arts and science, departments of visual communication and hotel management celebrated 385th Madras Day on August 22, 2024 in collaboration with the Rotaract Club.The event was a grand affair held  within the college campus, with participation from students and faculty, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of Chennai.The Event was a three days celebration,various competitions like painting, singing, photography, and cooking without fire were held among the students on 20-08-24 under the theme “Our Chennai.” aiming to celebrate the essence of the city.A Marathon was held on 21-08-24 under the theme ” Accident-Free Chennai”  promoting road safety awareness. A special exhibition featured photographs taken by the students, reflecting their perspectives on Chennai’s culture and life. And a food market, offering a variety of dishes, which was a major attraction on the event day.Our principal, Dr. T.S. Shanthi, presided over the event, lending her support and encouragement to the participants.

The event was graced by two distinguished guests Mr. Bhupesh Pitchumani – Head Chef of Writer’s Café, Chennai , Mr. Vignesh Kannan – Writer & Film Director.

Both guests contributed to the significance of the event by presenting awards to the winners of various competitions and encouraging the students with their insightful words.The event was a grand success.The event not only provided a platform for students to showcase their talents but also fostered a sense of community and pride in the city’s heritage.

MADRAS DAY 2023

The Department of Visual Communication Celebrated Madras Day 2023, the rich history, culture and heritage of Chennai is celebrated on the theme “Madras Parambarai”.Students from other departments participated in Drawing, Photography and Gana Singing competitions and won prizes. The students of the visual communication department exhibited photographs showcasing the historical places in Madras. Goli and Pambaram games were conducted for students. Performance with Parai created a great vibration to the event. The winners of the competitions and games are appreciated with medals and certificates.

INFINITY 2023

The Department of Visual Communication Celebrated Infinity on 28-07-2023 .The event showcased the extraordinary talents of our students, pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling and design.The students showcased their individual talent in Photography, Graphic Design, Art work, Documentary, Short Film, PSA and Reels .The students are awarded and encouraged for their creative work. The celebrities from different sectors of media are invited as chief guests for this event.

Event Highlights:

  • Creative Exhibition of Students: Photography, Graphic Design, Artwork,Short Films,Documentary, PSA and Reels are exhibited.

Chief Guest Appreciation: The chief guest interacted with the students after watching their works and appreciated them and also gave inputs and suggestions to improve. Students are awarded for their individual works.

  • Lingeshwaran III yr and Prakash II yr won II prize in group dance in Guru Utsav 2019, on 1st February, held at Gurunanak college, Chennai.
  • Prakash – III prize and Thulsiram – II Prize of II yr students won the competition organized by Tamil nadu forest department on wetland celebration day held on 2nd February
  • III yr and II yr students went for an Industrial visit to LV Prasad studio, Vadapalani, chennai on 30th January.
  • Divya, I year Viscom won “Best RJ” award in Kalloori saral Award 2018 organised by yuwave Tamil online radio.
  • Thulasiram (II yr) – won I Prize, Mr. Sangeeth (IIyr) won – II Prize, Mr. Prakash (IIyr) won – III prize, Mr. Ajith kumar (III yr) won- III prize, in a cartoon competition, organized at AASRAYAM in association with Asan memorial association presents SARGAM 2019.
  • Our viscom students won overall championship in the inter-department cultural event on 01 March 2019.

Workshops and Seminars

  • Drawing competition and Tamil poetry competition was conducted on the topic “Kalaignar” among the department students in the book club activity on 10th August.
  • Seminar on career growth in Multimedia Industry was organized for the III yr students in the department. Mr.Manikandan, Manager, Image Creative Education Pvt Ltd,Chennai gave a special lecture on 14th August.
  • Seminar on “Photoshop techniques to create graphic templates” was conducted for the III years, Mr.Balasubramanian, Technical expert from Opportunity Infotech, Chennai gave lecture on 20th August.
  • As a part of the extracurricular activity and subject based activity, the 2nd year students of the department have organised AD-DICTION on 20th February 2019 in the department. One day event was organised with the exhibition, competitions and guest lecturers as a part of educational needs. The theme for the event was “Branding and Advertising trends”. All the exhibits were based on the theme. As a part of the activity students made models and exhibited their concepts.
  • PANORA” (Photography exhibition cum contest) an event organized by the department of visual communication that is dedicated for photography enthusiasts colleges in and around the city. This year the students have taken the initiative of transforming the event to a bigger level as an inter-college event. Our III yr student works have been exhibited in the show. The competition was conducted for the other college students. We received nearly 75 entries from 25 colleges for the competition. Our Department Chief Mentor Mr. Sethumadhavan and Guests of Honour Mr. Jai Kumar, Managing Director, Impress Stills Studio, Chennai and Prinicpal inaugurated the event and interacted with the budding professionals. Following the event Mr. Vinoth Chan, Photographer was the Judge for the competition and Mr. Dinesh K Babu, Cinematographer (“8 Thottakkal ”)
  • Alice Angel, Executive Producer, Colors channel Deliver a speech about the functions of channels, TRP, trends and techniques in producing programs, on 7th September for 3rd year students.
  • Mr.Ganesh, Visual efx supervisor, wild Animation studios, Chennai gave hands-on training about how to use green matte for shooting and Visually edit with effects, on 6th September, 3rd year students are benefitted.
  • First year students went for an industrial visit to Lalit Kala academy Chennai on 31st August to get exposure on different types of painting formats,printing process.

13th Asan Video Awards

The Department of Visual Communication, celebrated its 13th Asan Drishya Awards 2019, a national level campus short film fest. It was an attempt to encourage and recognize aspiring filmmakers who are enrolled as students in various Colleges/Institutions all over India. This year we have received around  85 entries from various colleges’, institutes and academy from all over India in these four categories (Short Film, Documentary, Animation and Scene recreation). The entries were shortlisted and evaluated by the jury team headed by our chief mentor and his members – Dr. Vijaya Raghavan (Film Critic) and Mr. Santhana Bharathi (Actor, Director and Producer). The winners and runner-up for the awards will receive a total of Rs 1, 20,000 as prize for their achievements.

The distinguished luminary Director Mr. Rajesh M, an accomplished and well known name in the south film industry was the chief guest for the awards function. He is fondly acclaimed as an instant hit director for his films ‘Oru Kal Oru Kannadi, Vaasuvum Saravanum Onna Padichavanga’, Siva Manasula Sakthi ‘ Varutha padatha Valibar sangam’ and more, who has shown constant endeavour in his career and has added more grace by attending this ceremony.

  • P.Sri jothi, HOD, has participated and presented research paper on Impact of social Media on climate change communication among youth. In a delegate meeting on Round Table meet on mass communication IISF 2017,Indian Science Festival held on 14 the October, at NIOT, Chennai.

Sri Jothi, HOD, has Participated and Presented a research article titled “Impact of Social Media on Youth: Interventions and Intepretations of Cultural changes in the society, in an National conference on Growing Digital World: Multiphasic insights and responsibilities which was organised by the Department of Counselling Psychology, Madras School of Social Work, Chennai.
  • Vinay Kumar, Asst.prof has participated in a national level Art camp, held on 14th Jan to 20th Jan, 2018 at Mangalore.

Worshops & Seminars

  • Department of visual communication has organized Addiction 2017 as a part of Curriculum activity.
  • Students of second year has participated in the Junk art competition and displayed their works in the exhibition, the winners are awarded with the momento.
  • Guest lecture also was arranged for the event in the topic  TRENDS IN ADVERTISING
  • Guests for the event invited from the Advertising agencies MR.Charles Aloysius Director of Postlor Interactive India Pvt ltd and Mr.Aazam Director of Ad Techies. 
  • The cleanliness campaign was done in AKG public School for the kids I std to III std in the school premises on 18th Aug,2017.  Awareness on cleanliness  and health was educated to the children through various creative programmes like mime, puppet show, stop motion show and by dance. The children were interestingly participated and interacted well during the programmes.
  • Book club activity-to enhance and motivate the reading habit among students every two weeks in once the book club activities are done. This time Tamil poetry writing competition was conducted within our dept. students, topics   kalam in Kanavugal, Kuzhaindaigal, rocket. Mr. Ravivarman, III yr viscom won 1st prize.

12th Asan Video Awards

This year we have organised an inter-collegiate cultural competitions, nearly 25 colleges had participated in various events and competitions.   • As a part of co-curricular activities in the department Movie club has been started for the III yr students to get exposure to various international movies, where they gain knowledge in script, screenplay, movement and other more technical aspects. As an initiative Million Dollar Baby was screened on 24/06/2016 in the department.
  • International Tiger day was celebrated on 29th July in our collage campus, in the part of event II year Viscom students performed a street play to create awareness of Save Tigers and also designed posters and art work.
  • Our department participated in ‘Genesis 2016’ event on 11th and 12th August in Asan Memorial School.
  • Organized a seminar on 12th July, 2016 for III year students, about Channel Promotion and Programme production techniques, presented by Mr. Franklin On Air Promotion Head, and Mr. Tholkappiam Sr. Programme Producer, Pudhiya thalaimurai News Channel, Chennai.
  • Organized a seminar on 13th July, 2016 for II year students, about Adobe Indesign techniques, presented by Mr. Balasubramaniam and Ms. Archana, Opportunity Infortech,Chennai.
  • Organized a Guest lecture on 26th July, 2016 for II year students, about Printing Technology presented by Mr. Niaz Ahmed, Assistant Professor, Vels University,
  • “PANORA” (Photography exhibition cum contest) an event organized by the department of visual communication that is dedicated for photography enthusiastic students in the college. Our III yr student works have been exhibited and this year the students have taken the initiative of transforming the event to creative aspects by introducing different thematic concepts like Macro, Silhouette, Light and shades and Super impose.
  • Mr. Prabhu, Photographer from Highlight photography and Mr. Sriram, Video Journalist from News 18 were invited as chief guest for the event, held on 7th October, Friday. The winners of the contest were awarded with the certificates and prizes
  • Chief Mentor Mr. Sethumadhavan and respected Principal inaugurated the event AD-Diction and released the lab journal Asan Visual Times and interacted with the budding professionals.
  • AD-Diction 2016 Advertisement Exhibition cum competitions for inter department have been organized in the Viscom department, held on 6th October, Thursday. As a part of the activity the II yr class room walls have been painted and art works were done by the students. II year students show cased their works based on various advertising concepts in the event. Off stage and On stage events were conducted (Slogan writing, logo designing, Jingles, Teleshopping), the winners of the events were appreciated by the memento and certificates.
  • Yacoob, CEO, Media Miracle advertisement company was invited for the guest interactive session to share the industry trend and his experience.
  • One day workshop on Digital Visual effects was organised in the viscom dept for all the three year students to get industry exposure and to gain knowledge on Visual effects software by the technical expert Mr. Varan and Mr.Thirumalai from ICAT, Santhome, Chennai on 23rd September 2016.

11th Asan Video Awards

The Department of Visual Communication, Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science organize an annual awards function called Asan Video Awards (AVA). This year’s edition will be the 11th consecutive year with the expectations going up every time. We collect entries from various colleges; institutes all over India on the following categories mentioned below and award them with cash prices and trophies. Asan Video Awards was inducted in the year 2006 by the 1st batch of our visual communication department. It was pioneered and mentored by our pillar of strength and guide Mr. K. S. Sethumadhavan and our management committee of Asan Memorial Association, Chennai.

This year as we move onto the next decade of our unparalleled awards function, for the very first time we had the privilege of getting a team of sponsor with ICAT Design and Media College as an associate main sponsor, CADD Software institute, Revolin International Education, Lenskart.com, Kaizen software and Padma Technical Institute were our supporting co-sponsors. We had invited many media related departments, colleges, universities, film institute’s in and around the state and country. The entries were shortlisted and evaluated by the jury team headed by Mr. K.S. Sethumadhavan and his members – Mr. Muneer Ahmed (Writer, Cinematographer, Director), Mr. Anu Mohan (Actor, Film Director) and  Mr. R. Sridharan (Retd. Principal, MGR Govt. Film and TV Institute). They had found many interesting works and thought provoking films, but they had to nominate only the few for the final awards. The winners and runner-up for the awards will receive a total of Rs 60,000 as prize for their achievements.

The trophy that is awarded to them is a symbol of pride and a unique identity in the media education setup in and around the country by showing commitment towards the film industry which is an epitome of success. Our distinguished chief guest Mr. Balaji Tharaneetharan, the celebrity and chief guest for the awards function is a critically acclaimed and an instant hit director of the film ‘Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom’, he gave away the prizes and interacted with the gatherings present.

Workshops & Seminars

  • Organized a seminar on 11th August, 2015 for III year students, about Camera techniques and Lighting techniques and demonstrated the latest canon techniques, presented by Mr. Saiprasath, Technical expert, Canon, Chennai.
  • Our department participated in ‘Genesis 2015’ event on 17th and 18th August in Asan Memorial School.
  • Organized a seminar on 4th August, 2015 for III year and II year students, about Visual effects and Compositing (software-Nuke), Designing newsletter (Adobe INdesign) presented by Mr. Varun and Mr.Manigandan team, Technical experts, Image, Chennai.
  • Organized a seminar on 9th September, 2015 for III year students, about Visual effects in post production techniques presented by Mr. Sarathkumar, Technical expert, Ideal Graduate.
  • As a part of co-curricular activities in the department Movie club has been started for the III yr students to get exposure to various international movies, where they gain knowledge in script, screenplay, movement and other more technical aspects. As an initiative Roman holiday was screened on 25/09/2015 in the department.
  • Organized a seminar on 14th September, 2015 for III year students, about How multimedia can be used in journalism? by Rachel Savoure from Indian Institute of Journalism & New media, Mumbai.
  • As department co-curricular activity Book club was inaugurated on 11th September 2015, students contributed books for the department and book review was done by the I year students. K.S Sethumadhavan contributed his books for the book club. Mrs .M. S Aby contributed technical books for the department.
  • As a part of the extracurricular activity and subject based activity, the 2nd year students of the department have organised AD-DICTION on16th October 2015 in the department. One day event was organised with the exhibition, competitions and guest lecturers as a part of educational needs. The competitions were conducted as an inter-department activity.
  • The theme for the event was “Advertising trends of India in a global environment”. All the exhibits was based on the theme. As a part of the activity students painted the wall in their class room to help substantiate their work related to the above mentioned theme.
  • PANORA” (Photography exhibition cum contest) an event organized by the department of visual communication that is dedicated for photography enthusiasts colleges in and around the city. This year the students have taken the initiative of transforming the event to a bigger level as an inter-college event. Our III yr student works have been exhibited in the show. The competition was conducted for the other college students. We received nearly fifty entries from sixteen colleges for the competition. Our Department Chief Mentor Mr. Sethumadhavan and Prinicpal inaugurated the event. Mr. Sethumadhavan interacted with the budding professionals.
  • Sathiyan Suriyan a renowned cinematographer, who has worked in projects like “MAYA”, “MUGAMOODI” and “YUDHAM SEI” was a chief guest. We had an interactive session with the guest. Students photographs are exhibited based on the following themes. *Street Treat. *Beautiful Blur. *Wild Hunt. *Cultura *Frame 50. The event was held on the 9th of October 2015 at 10am to 4pm in the department.

10th Asan Video Awards

  • Asan Video Awards is the prime event of Visual Communication department. This year we celebrated 10th Asan Video Awards was inducted in the year 2006 by the 1st batch of our visual communication department. It was pioneered and mentored by our pillar of strength and guide Mr. K. S. Sethumadhavan and our management committee of Asan Memorial Association, Chennai.  We got nearly 100 entries from various media institutes and colleges at national level. The competition was categorised into streams like Short Films, Documentry, Animated movies and Ad films. The entries were shortlisted and evaluated by the jury team headed by Mr. K.S. Sethumadhavan, Film Thespian and his members – Mr. Sasi, Film Director, Dr. Vijayaraghavan, Retd. Director Songs and Drama Division, I&B Ministry and Mr. Shivprasadh, Producer and Columnist.  The winners and runner-up for the awards was received a total of Rs 60,000 as prize for their achievements. The students of Ethiraj college, Hindustan Arts and Science college, Pondichery University, Barathiar University, SRM university, Madurai Kamaraj University, LV Prasad Academy won awards. Every year the centre stage was adorned by various eminent, this year we had the celebrity chief guest for the award function is a renowned film director Mr. Arivazhagan of ‘EERAM’ fame. He gave valuable speech which was one of the most interesting information in the event for our students. Director Mr. K. S. Sethu Madhavan shared his experience and blessed the winners. The event related activities and information were updated in the department website, youtube and in social media network. The AVA event was covered in The Hindu and Dinamani dailies.

  • III yr student Mr. Noel and team won many cash prizes for his short film ‘Enthai’ in various film festivals.
  • Delphy, I yr vis com. Won II prize in Malayalam ‘Poetry’ competition in Hindustan college 12-09-2014.
  • Mr Sourav, III Year Viscom won the Best Actor award for his role in the short film “The Last Page” from Felicitas MVC, 2014.
  • Our students won semi finals in Radio Mirchi dance competition 21-8-2014.
  • Noel III year student won Ist prize in Ethiraj college short film festival on November.
  • Noel III year student and team won Ist prize in ‘FOCUS’ Inter-Collegiate Event category held on 27th February 2015 at SRM University.
  • III yr student Mr. Noel and team won Ist cash prize Rs.10,000/- in ‘Panacia 2014’ College festival in SRM Medical College Kattangulathur, for his short film ‘Enthai’ on 24.10.2014.
  • II year students Mr. Eshwar won best DJ award in Chennai and Mr. Mohammed Ali won runner up award in Chennai.
  • Sivajothi G, II year student have been appointed as a student Director for the Rotract club of our college. Has vital role in organising blood donation and clean road programmes.
  • III yr student Mr. Noel and team won Ist cash prize Rs.25,000/- in Karaikal short film festival 2014, for his short film ‘Enthai’ on 21.09.2014.
  • Noel and team won I prize in College Cultural fest, in Ethiraj college.
  • Sathish Kumar II year participated in internal cricket tournament and the team won runner up.
  • Ranoje and Mr.Vivekanandan won Second prize in Short film competition organized by Athmasaranalyam trust NGO, trust, Chennai.
  • Our Students defended and won the overall championship in Sangamam 2015 since 2007.
  • Vivekanandan was awarded as a best cinematography for the short film ‘Nee’ in ‘AURGANON’ in SRM university, Ramapuram campus.

  • Mr.Vinay Kumar, Assit Prof. participated in a workshop from 30th Nov- 7th Dec, organised by Bachhawat Foundation and Khoj GenNext Residency, West Bengal.
  • III year students completed one month industrial training in Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai, co ordinated by Mr. Ashok Kumar.

Workshops & Seminars

  • Organized many seminars and interactive sessions for visual communication students, like Adobe InDesign software and training, Z-Brush software and its industrial needs, 2D animation, Editing, Visual effects, Wedding Photography and Script Writing.
  • Terracota workshop was organized and conducted on 22nd Jan, thursday with the Technical expert from the industry for our I year students and the students from various schools around our college also participated, coordinated by Mr. Vinay Kumar.
  • Campus recruitment was conducted for III year Visual Communication. 2adpro Advertising company Postlor an advertising company selected few students. co-ordinated by Dr. P. Sri Jothi.

9th Asan Video Awards 2015

  • Asan Video Awards is the prime event of Visual Communication department. This year we celebrated 9th We got nearly 80 entries from various institutes and colleges at national level. The competition is categorised into streams like Short Films, Documentry, Animated movies and Ad films. Mr. K. S. Sethu Madhavan, Mr. Santhana Bharathi, Mr.Lenin and Mr. Muneer Ahamed were the jury members to finalise the best students work. The winners of the 9th AVA 2015 were awarded a prize of Rs 75,000. This year we had Film director Mr. ’Jayam ’ Raja M as a chief guest to grace the occasion. Director Mr. ’Jayam ’ Raja M  gave valuable speech which was one of the most interesting information in the event for our students. Editor Mr. Lenin pulled the crowd by his pulsating speech about the film industry. Director Mr. K. S. Sethu Madhavan shared his experience and blessed the winners.

  • SRM University conducted INK Five a Cultural event where Mr. Naveen Kumar and Mr. Srihari of Viscom won 2nd Prize.  ‘THE LAST PAGE’ a Short Film directed  by Mr. Sivasankar of 2nd year Viscom won the title of 3rd Best Film in ‘Legent-2013’, Sathybama University.
  • Mr. Sourav, 2nd year Viscom won the Best Actor Award and Mr. Bahul Ramesh of 3rd year Viscom won the Best Cinematographer Award from Anand Institute of Higher Technology.
  • Mr. Chrys Peter of 3rd year Viscom worked as Asst.Director for a Tamil Serial ‘Mamiyar Thevai’.  A Short Film ‘Nee aga Entrum Naan’ brought the Best Director Award for Mr. Prabhakaran of 2nd year Viscom.  Mr. Vignesh of 2nd year Viscom won the 1st Prize for Painting from St.Thomas College.
  • ‘Idhu Nam Desam’ an article of Mr. Kirishanth Selvanayagam of 3rd year Viscom was published in Srilankan Newspaper.
  • Mr. Alex Antony of 2nd year Viscom won 1st Prize in Online Photography Competition.
  • A group of Viscom students along with few students from other departments of Shift I & Shift II won overall Championship in Vels Nakshatra 2014.

Staff Achievement

Mr. S. Pragadeeshvel, Asst.Professor of Viscom Department presented a paper in the UGC sponsor ACT-TNP National Conference held at Bharathiar University.

The 8th Asan Video Awards ceremony was held on 7th March 2014 with grandeur inviting Mr.Shiva, popular Cine Director as Chief Guest to give away awards to different categories of film making.
